Old Friends, New Friends

“Make new friends, but keep the old,
One is silver, the other gold.”

Remember this little poem which was often written in our old autograph books? I like it because I have found both old and new friends to be so precious to me.

I celebrated my 66th birthday this weekend. To celebrate, Walter and I took a quick trip to Amarillo to visit some old friends. How much we enjoyed seeing Neal and Linda Williams, Bob and Beth Steeger and Dave and Pat Coldiron! Also while there, we drove up to Fritch where we had lived in about 1978-79. We stopped by and surprised Merrill and Lois Silvey, whom we hadn’t seen for years! Then when we arrived back home, I had a voice mail from Wilma, my best friend since third grade, wishing me a happy birthday! What a blessing old friends are!

Old friends, new friends--no matter how long I have known them, each is so special to me. Most old friends I do not get to see very often, but I love them none-the-less! And newer friends, which I might see every day at work, are also very dear to me. Each has his/her own unique spot in my heart!
Here’s another quote from my collection of thoughts on friendship:

How many, many friendships
Life’s path has let me see;
I’ve kept a scrap of each of them
To make the whole of me.

(June Masters Bacher)

If we are what we eat, we are whom we love! We are the result of the company we keep and the friends we hold dear. Someone has put it this way: Each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry.
Here are two more of my favorite quotes about friendship:

“A true friend is one who thinks you’re a good egg even if you’re half-cracked!”

“Good friends are cheaper than therapy.”

Thank you for being you and for being my friend!
