Tasting Pies!

I have a book titled "14,000 Things to Be Happy About." It is simply a list of fun and pleasant things to think about. At random, three examples are: "spiral staircases," " Twinkles cereal," and "sliding back and forth in the bathtub in order to mix the too-hot water with the cooler water." Well, I have a new one of my own to add!

It is "judging a pie contest." How fun is that? I never dreamed that I would be doing that. Recently at an Allen Heritage Guild event here in town there was a pie baking contest in addition to some other old-time activities. I stopped by actually thinking that the whole event may have been called off due to the inclement weather, as some of the activities were to be held outside. But to my pleasant surprise, it was on, and as I browsed through the displays, a friend of mine called me aside to ask me if I would like to help with the pie judging, since not all the judges had showed up. Well, of course, I would love to do that! And what a pleasure it was to take little bites of all the different pies. It was much harder to actually score them on the basis of their appearance, taste and overall appeal, since they were ALL so good! We three judges chose a German chocolate pie, a cherry pie and an apple-cream pie as the winning entries. Thus I wrote off one more entry on my list of things I want to do in my lifetime, a list which I never even thought of making!

I have a friend who says that when she was in junior high school, she made a list of things she wanted to do and see in her lifetime. She is actually finishing off the accomplishment of her ambitious list. The only one left is to sky dive on her 70th birthday. Whew!

I never was brave enough to make goals when I was young. And I'm still afraid to make any plans bigger than cleaning out a closet!
